The founder K.A.Velayudham’s father Ayyappan had started making and selling appalam all by himself somewhere around 1915 for his livelihood. After his father’s demise , K.A Velayudham took over and continued the business. As he had expertise in appalam making and marketing acumen , he started expanding the business.The appalam,being branded as Ambika Appalam,became very popular in Chennai, particularly among Brahmin Community, because of its supreme quality, hygienity and taste.We can proudly say that we were the pioneers of Appalam making in Chennai and the brand Ambika Appalam has been successfully handed down the generation.
As the brand Ambika Appalam gained popularity in and around Chennai, the founder K.A.Velayudham thought of diversifying the business into setting up of retail outlets and as result, the first retail outlet named Ambika Appalam Depot came into existence in North Mada Street, Mylapore. The Ambika Appalam Depot at Mylapore became great success and so he opened few more outlet in and around Chennai.At the outlets,high quality masala powders, all types of vadams and vathals,snacks, other ready to fry and ready to eat items are sold under the brand Ambika.
At present,the firm Ambika Appalam Depot is lead by K.V.Sukumar,son of the founder K.A.Velayudham. His wife K.S.Nirmala and his sons K.S.Kannan and K.S.Vishnu assist him in successfully running the business.As the fourth generation had joined the business,they decided to hive off the marketing division into a separate company so that they can aggressively market Ambika Appalam and so they formed a partnership firm called AMBIKA FOODS for the purpose .
